We recently caught up with researcher Victor Martinez, Ph.D. of BC Cancer Agency to discuss his work with piRNAs using Partek Flow software, which allowed him to efficiently analyze one of the worlds biggest cohorts of sncRNAs.
  • X-Seq Story: On Failure of Molecular Biology and Being Fat

    February 2, 2017
By: Ivan Lukic - Field Application Scientist, Partek Incorporated

I recently had dinner with an old friend, a scientist and former faculty member at a top university and now at a biotechnology entrepreneurship. On our way there he challenged me by verbalizing his disappointment in modern biology. In his opinion, there has been no significant discovery in biology since the 60s and the deciphering of the genetic code. While that viewpoint could be considered extreme, it made me wonder what the next epic breakthrough might be.
  • Zika Research Advances Through Next Generation Sequencing

    December 7, 2016
By: Ivan Lukic - Field Application Scientist, Partek Incorporated

The Zika virus outbreak has been headline news throughout 2016 for good reason. According to the World Health Organization, 75 countries since 2007 have reported cases of Zika virus with 92% of those occurring between 2015 and 2016. Since no specific therapy is available, a number of research groups are focusing on the pathogenesis of Zika virus infection.
  • Aliens Among Us: How I Analysed Non-Model Organism Data in Partek Flow

    November 29, 2016
By: Simit Patel - Field Application Scientist, Partek Incorporated

Recently a post about how the microscopic water bear (tardigrade) can survive in extreme drought, temperature, pressure and radiation as well as in the vacuum of space popped up on my Twitter feed. Being the fan I am of anything space related I was intrigued. I downloaded the publically available data to explore what is it about the water bear transcriptomic profile that allows them to survive the extreme environmental difference between Earth and space. This presented the perfect opportunity for me to see how well Partek® Flow® software would let me analyze non-model organism data, and at the same time, not have to deal with any command line tools.

  • CASE STUDY: Researchers Discover Potential Diagnostic Tool for Alzheimer’s Disease with Help of Partek Software

    September 8, 2015

As the world population ages, Alzheimer’s disease will become a significant socio-economic burden to the health care system. That’s why Dr. Lesley Cheng of La Trobe University, who recently moved from The University of Melbourne, set out to identify the disease specific exosomal microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in serum using deep-sequencing technology.
